Study Verses To Contemplate

Study Verses To Contemplate

Ephesians 6: 10-20  “PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD”

The first question we should ask ourselves is “to whom is Paul talking?”  In chapter 5 Paul starts out “Be ye therefore followers of God…”  In the beginning of chapter 6 Paul starts out “Children, obey your parents in the Lord…” and then starts talking about the armour of God with the following words “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.”  The next question is “For what purpose is Paul giving this instruction?”  From the analogy that Paul uses, he isn’t talking about those individuals who were fleeing or hiding but who were going to go into the world for spiritual battle.  One puts on armor when going into battle, not when fleeing.   Throughout this passage, the main subject is the entire word of God.

There are six parts to the armor which are separate from, but to be used with constant prayer.  Note that prayer is very crucial, but prayer is not a replacement for the Word of God.

The belt of truth which is holding on to the truth of God’s word and all the different ways it instructs us.

The breastplate of righteousness which like its physical counterpart protects the vital parts of what is inside us (i.e. our vital organs versus our souls).

The gospel of peace talks about using your feet to readily take the good news into enemy territory.

The shield of faith means having a firm confidence in the Lord and His word such that the weapons of the opponents bounce off the shield.

The helmet of salvation means the assurance of eventual deliverance and confidence in the victory.

The sword of the Spirit, which the Bible itself tells us, is the word of God.  The Greek word used here for “word” is “rhema” not “logos,” indicating individual text versus the whole Bible.  We can think of the word of God as an arsenal of weapons each to be used for different needs.

The Bible is a history book, a book on origins, a book on ethics, a book on morality, a book on social organization, a book on ultimate truth(s), a book on prophesy, but mainly the Bible is a book of salvation and ultimate destiny. We can therefore use the entire Bible to uphold God’s truth, armour ourselves, and defeat all lies.

Study Verses from previous weeks

What are the meaning of the words "world" and "creation" in the following versus?  How old is the earth and man?

Man was created and not evolved:
Mark 16:15 "Go into all the world and preach the gospel (good news) to all creation"  NASB (NIV)

Creation has a purpose:
Matt 13:35  ""So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:  "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world"" NIV

Purpose is salvation:
Matt 25:34 "take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world" NIV

Prophets (man) there from the very start of the world:
Luke 1:70 "As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began" KJV

Man and women were there from the very start and not evolved:
Gen 1:27  "But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female" NKJV

Reasoning (man) and things (matter) are there from the very start:
Rom 1:20  "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made"  KJV

Rom 8:21  "because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God" NKJV

Conclusion:
The world was created.  Man and woman, reasoning, and all things were all created.  All were created at the beginning.

Is the importance of creation life or the salvation of man?
